6 ways to keep babies and small children cool in hot weather

6 ways to keep babies and small children cool in hot weather

I don’t know about you, but this heat is already kicking my arse.  It’s bad enough when you’re having to deal with the effects of the heat when you’re more used to the kind of damp mediocrity we call ‘weather’ here in the South East, but when you’re stuck at home all day (and night) with small children who are also adversely affected it can be a new form of hell entirely.

From lack of sleep to the more serious worries about sunburn and heat stroke, looking after small people in hot weather is a stressful business. A stressful business only made worse when, instead of lounging by a pool in a tile-lined mediterranean villa designed for the heat, you’re stuck in an over-insulated 2 bed semi with a pocket handkerchief of a garden and no trees.

Leap day, a day out of time

Leap day, a day out of time

So today is the 29th February, a leap day, a day that only comes around once every four years. That makes it kind of magical, doesn’t it? People who are born on this day have a quarter of the birthdays for their age (which is a bit crap for them, actually, but that’s not my problem) because every three years their birth date just doesn’t exist. Folklore would have it that today is a date where the woman can propose to her man rather than the other way around and although in this day and age that seems a little outmoded, it can lead to some fun engagements that may otherwise have been waiting around a little longer.

Parklife: an unscientific review of Cutteslowe park

So Boy, Girl and I headed out to North Oxford today, ostensibly so The Boy could have a taster session of ‘Hockeytots’ – a hockey course for two to four year olds run by the Oxford Hawks hockey team (honestly, arming three year olds, who thought that was a good idea? Oh yes. Me. Doh).  He actually loved it and did rather well – it channelled his aggression in a productive manner and he could practice his listening and following-instruction skills.  Turns out he’s a bit of a demon at thwacking a ball with a hockey stick and his competitive spirit is burning strongly, so we may head back for another go at that.

The great TV ban – or why I cut off my nose to spite my own face

The great TV ban – or why I cut off my nose to spite my own face

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I recently had a baby.  Nine weeks ago our daughter came into this world and has made our lives richer in so many ways and (so far) our three year old son is also one of her fan club.

But (and there’s always a ‘but’, isn’t there?) he has not been unaffected by her arrival.  For several weeks previous to the birth, and in the nine weeks since, he has been horrifically violent – to almost everyone but the baby.

June 25, 2014 by Milla Leave a Comment

The Pinworks in Oxford, the craft school arm of fab haberdashery shop ‘Darn It & Stitch’ recently invited one of Live Oxfordshire’s representatives, Rosie, along to one of their courses so she could review it for us.  Read on to find out what Rosie had to say about “Little Stitches: Sewing for your baby” which was aimed at beginners wanting to learn how to sew things for their little ones. The course ran over two afternoon sessions over two weeks in the workroom above the shop in central Oxford.

Unusual suggestions for Fathers’ Day gifts – presents and experiences in Oxford or Oxfordshire

Oh goodness, the one gift-giving occasion where you can’t just throw flowers at the problem and hope it goes away (well, not unless your father and husband/partner are very different from mine, anyway) – what to do? I’ve been caught in this quandary myself and, in the desperate hunt to find something unusual or unique to give my dad and the father of my child (as the child in question has no finances or shopping skills, being only two), have hunted out a few great local businesses selling fabulous products – or experiences – that should appeal to most men.  So if you’re looking for the perfect present to give for father’s day, look no further, we have a few suggestions…
